Garage design and organization subreddit?
Main Post:
R/garage is about a band, r/garages has 4 posts. I just bought a house and I'm looking to get nerdy about garages. Am I missing something or does it all end up here and r/DIY?
Top Comment: Gonna sound kinda fruity but pinterest actually has a ton of good info for this kind of thing.
Best ideas you've seen for a garage?
Main Post:
I have a non-attached 25x40 shop, which I'm slowly starting to customize to my needs.
I've seen several interesting ideas (LEDs arranged in a hexagon) in this subreddit, and I'm slowly collecting ideas for my shop.
What are some of the most creative, or most useful ideas you've seen posted here, or came across elsewhere?
My plans for the shop:
- auto & motorcycle repair; so add appropriate tools & lifts
- some welding MIG/TIG/stick/brazing; so add ventilation, welding table, safe welding area
- some woodworking but I'm no cabinet maker; so room for table saw, work benches
- some metal fabrication but I'm no machinist; so add a drill press, large vise
- storage for motorcycle, mower, snow blower; so add easily accessed trickle chargers
- storage spare materials (wood, metals)
- sit on my ass and drink a beer after completing a project; so add music and cooler
Top Comment: My shop is 28’x40’. I heat it in winter. Wish I had a floor drain and a way to get car exhaust outside without opening the door.
Designing a garage from scratch, what do you wish you did/didn't do with yours?
Main Post:
Moving from an apartment to house with a garage, woo hoo! It's just under 18' by 12', with a rollup garage door on one short side and a regular door on the other short side.
For its use, I basically do home improvement projects, build a gate or basic piece of furniture here, fix the sprinkler system there, toy with electronics now and then. So I'm imagining a very multifunctional garage-y garage.
Anything you wish you did or didn't include in yours? Storage ideas you would recommend or not recommend? Thanks!

Please - and I am begging here - help me figure out how to organize my garage
Main Post:
We moved into our house about two years ago and the garage has primarily been used for storage (clearly). Putting up shelves and organizing tools and such has been on my mind forever now but I can’t seem to pull trigger on a layout, so I’ve come to you beautiful people for advice.
A few pics of my garage in its glorious state here: https://imgur.com/a/F4AbjZl
Personally I think the diagonal wall throws things off, and it has a water tap and a HVAC pipe as well that doesn’t get used (can’t see either due to the mess)
A few things that I’d like to do:
- Put up tire racks for two sets of tires. We’ve got the racks I just need to sort out where to put them. I’m favouring the diagonal wall for some reason
- DIY shelves for storage - pretty standard stuff. I think i want it along the right wall, and build in sections for the waste bins, but I’m not sure how far into the garage it should go, and then what goes in between the shelf and the far wall? This includes overhead - two overheads by the garage or overhead storage on the far wall?
- Work station. I’d love to move my 3D printing gear into the garage and just have a space to organize tools and such as well. For this I’m thinking of using both far and diagonal walls.
- Whatever’s left is where I’ll put slats for hanging up garden tools and shovels etc.
My biggest mindfuck is shelving and where to put a workstation. I’ll take any advice and hopefully provide progress pics if I ever pull the trigger on this project. Thank you!!
Top Comment: I’ll add, before you hang a bunch of stuff on the walls, now is the time for a coat of paint. It’ll be 100% easier not having to brush in around any brackets/hooks/tire racks you put on the walls. And before you paint, every stud is marked by a vertical line of screws right now. Put a small mark on the floor so any time you go to hang something down the road you know exactly where the studs are.
